Happy Birthday ! July 17th 2006

This morning we got up and went to the hospital for our 6am induction. I had to be admitted into the hospital first, then we got our room. I changed into my hospital gown got in bed and they inserted the IV. Man that thing killed! I could feel the needle go into my vein.

So by 7am the Pitocin started flowing. I didn't really start feeling anything for 45 minutes. As time went on they got stronger and stronger. I can't really describe the way it feels to have contractions. It is weird. Not like cramps and not like normal stomach pain. More like an overwhelming intense feeling. Most of the time one would come, I would get through it and go back to watching TV. Then it got pretty bad once Dr. Pitson came in a broke James' water. I was starting to have 40 second long contractions with 20 second brakes. I was only 3 cm at that point. The nurse came in and asked if I wanted something for the pain. It was called Staydol. Basically it didn't take "the edge" off the pain, just made me feel drunk! Then after a while they called the anesthesiologist.

He came in and inserted the needle in my back. That wasn't too much fun trying to bend forward while having contractions for him to place the needle. At one point I had to push my back into the needle. That hurt! The pain started going away. An edipural was seriously the best thing that could ever happen to a woman in labor. Why do people try to wait to get one? Why do women try to be brave and go without? They are crazy!

Well, everything was good after that. I felt so confident to be able to push these babies out.
Then James' heart rate started dip with every contraction and I was barely 4 cm. She really didn't like what was happening to his heart rate. She decided to take me off the pitocin for a few hours and I started falling out of labor. They put me back on for a while and the same thing would happen with James.

Since I wasn't making any progress and it was already 3:30pm, she decided it was best that I had a c-section. I was really bummed because I was really prepared to do this on my own. I was pretty scared to have the ceserean because I have never had stitches, much less major surgery. Nathan and I figured it was best for the babies and went for it. Also, we couldn't wait to see these little guys.

They schedule the ceserean for 5pm, but ended up not being able to round up the surgeons until 6pm. They rolled me into the OR where there were literally 10 nurses and doctors in the room. I made sure to tell the anestheologist to top me off because I could still feel my legs.

The surgery was so weird. I felt them cut through every layer. I felt as if I was being stuffed and unstuffed like a turkey. I was shaking uncontrollably during the surgery and was freaking out while Nathan comforted me. He was great at doing that.

Once they got to the babies they pulled me left and right, back and forth to get them out. I heard the first little cry(James) at 6:18pm and the second (Shane) at 6:19pm. I didn't even get to see them, they just rushed me out of the room and took me to recovery.

I was down in recovery for an hour and a half. It was kind of a bummer that I didn't even get to see the babies, but at least Nathan was with them. He was wondering where they took me and what was taking so long. I guess they bring you there to make sure you are doing well after the surgery just incase anything were to happen.

After that, the nurses brought me back to the room and transfered me to the bed. There they brought my babies in and I fed them and held them. They were so precious.
